The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced an overnight closure on I-64 west in Hampton for overhead sign installation. This closure is part of the Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) Hampton Segment project.

The full four-hour closure will occur between Settlers Landing Road/Woodland Road (exit 267) and North Armistead Avenue (exit 265B). It is scheduled to start as early as July 2, with a backup date of July 3. The work is weather-dependent, and the schedule may change accordingly.

During this time, all lanes on I-64 west will be closed from 12:01 a.m. to 4 a.m. A signed detour will guide motorists from I-64 west to Woodland Road/Settlers Landing Road and North Armistead Avenue to re-access the interstate.

Additionally, the on-ramp from Settlers Landing Road/Woodland Road to I-64 west will be closed during this period. Eastbound travelers on Settlers Landing Road will follow a detour via Woodland Road, East Mercury Boulevard, Old Buckroe Road, back to Woodland Road, Settlers Landing Road, and North Armistead Avenue.

Single lane closures on I-64 will begin at 10 p.m. on July 1 leading up to the full closure at midnight. Periodic closures and detours are expected throughout summer and fall for further overhead sign installations.

Motorists are advised to use I-664 as an alternate route when possible and exercise caution near work zones by obeying speed limits and following lane markings. VDOT recommends using its free 511 Virginia traffic tools or the Waze GPS app for real-time road conditions before traveling.

This initiative is part of Phase 4C of the HREL Hampton Segment project which aims to convert existing lanes into express lanes while widening and repaving sections of I-64 from Mallory Street (exit 268) to LaSalle Avenue (exit 265A). The project includes work on six mainline bridges, one pedestrian underpass, replacement of two eastbound bridges over the Hampton River, and widening and rehabilitation of the westbound bridge.
