Paving operations are set to take place on northbound Interstate 81 in Rockbridge County between exit 191, the I-64 junction, and exit 195, Route 11. The work is scheduled from June 1 through June 12, 2025. Construction will occur during nighttime hours: Monday through Thursday from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., and Sunday nights from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. No work will be conducted on Friday or Saturday nights.
During the paving near the I-64/I-81 junction, the ramp connecting eastbound I-64 to northbound I-81 will be closed overnight. This ramp joins I-81 from the left lane near mile marker 192. Motorists traveling eastbound on I-64 needing access to northbound I-81 should use the detour via I-64 exit 56 onto southbound I-81, continue for three miles to exit 188A, merge onto eastbound Route 60 (East Midland Trail), and follow detour signs back onto northbound I-81 at the interchange.
The paving project will also involve overnight lane closures on northbound I-81, affecting either the left or right lanes depending on progress. All construction is subject to weather conditions.
