In early July, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will begin a series of overnight closures on I-64 in Hampton. These closures, each lasting up to four hours, are part of the Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) Hampton Segment project. The work involves installing overhead signs.

The closures will affect traffic in one direction at a time. I-64 westbound will be closed from Settlers Landing Road/Woodland Road (exit 267) to North Armistead Avenue (exit 265B), and I-64 eastbound from Rip Rap Road (exit 265C). The closures will occur between 12:01 a.m. and 4 a.m., with detours in place. The schedule is subject to change based on weather and other factors.

For the westbound closure, all lanes will be closed as early as July 1, with a backup date of July 2. A detour will direct motorists from I-64 west to Woodland Road/Settlers Landing Road and North Armistead Avenue to access the on-ramp back onto I-64 west. Additionally, the on-ramp from Settlers Landing Road/Woodland Road to I-64 west will also be closed during this time.

Traffic impacts for the westbound closure begin at 10 p.m. on June 30 with single lane closures leading up to midnight when the full closure begins. There will also be short-term stoppages for eastbound traffic between 12:01 a.m. and 4 a.m.

For the eastbound closure, all lanes will be closed starting as early as July 8, with July 9 as a backup date. Motorists on I-64 east will exit at Rip Rap Road and follow detours via North Armistead Avenue and Settlers Landing Road to re-enter I-64 east.

Eastbound traffic impacts start at 10 p.m. on July 7 with single lane closures leading up to midnight when the full closure begins. Short-term stoppages for westbound traffic are expected between 12:01 a.m. and 4 a.m.

These closures are part of ongoing efforts that may continue throughout summer and fall for additional sign installations. VDOT advises using alternate routes such as I-664 where possible and reminds drivers to stay alert near work zones.

Motorists can use VDOT’s free resources like the 511 Virginia traffic tools or Waze GPS app for real-time updates on road conditions before traveling.

The HREL Hampton Segment project involves converting existing lanes into Express Lanes, widening I-64, repaving lanes, adding travel lanes, and working on several bridges including replacements over the Hampton River.
