In early July, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will begin a series of overnight closures on I-64 in Hampton. These closures are necessary for overhead sign installation as part of the Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) Hampton Segment project.
The closures will last up to four hours each and occur in one direction at a time. I-64 west from Settlers Landing Road/Woodland Road (exit 267) to North Armistead Avenue (exit 265B) and I-64 east to Rip Rap Road (exit 265C) will be affected from 12:01 a.m. to 4 a.m., with detours in place. The schedule is weather- and schedule-dependent, so changes may occur.
For I-64 West, closures are planned as early as July 1, with backup dates of July 2 or July 3. “I-64 West Full Closure: All lanes on I-64 west will be closed overnight starting as early as Tuesday, July 1, from 12:01 a.m. to 4 a.m., between Settlers Landing Road/Woodland Road and North Armistead Avenue,” VDOT stated. A detour will direct motorists via Woodland Road/Settlers Landing Road and North Armistead Avenue.
The on-ramp from Settlers Landing Road/Woodland Road to I-64 west will also close during this time. Motorists traveling east on Settlers Landing Road will be directed through Woodland Road, East Mercury Boulevard, Old Buckroe Road, back to Woodland Road, Settlers Landing Road, and North Armistead Avenue.
Starting at 10 p.m. on June 30, single lane closures will precede the full westbound closure at midnight. There will also be short-term stoppages on July 1 for moving overhead structures into place.
For I-64 East, closures start as early as July 8 with a backup date of July 9. “I-64 East Full Closure: All lanes on I-64 east will be closed overnight starting as early as Tuesday, July 8, from 12:01 a.m. to 4 a.m., between Rip Rap Road (exit 265C) and Settlers Landing Road (exit 267),” according to VDOT’s release.
Starting at 10 p.m. on July 7, single lane closures lead up to the full eastbound closure at midnight with additional short-term stoppages for overhead structure placement.
These closures are part of an ongoing project that aims to convert existing lanes into Express Lanes and add new travel lanes over two miles between Mallory Street and LaSalle Avenue. The work includes improvements on six mainline bridges and replacing two eastbound bridges over the Hampton River while widening the westbound bridge.
The HREL Hampton Segment is part of a broader plan for a continuous high-occupancy toll Express Lanes network spanning approximately 45 miles across several regions including Newport News and Chesapeake.
Motorists are advised to use alternate routes such as I-664 when possible and remain cautious near work zones by following posted speed limits and signs. For real-time updates on road conditions or construction impacts, VDOT recommends using their free traffic tools like the VDOT’s free “511 Virginia” traffic tools or the Waze GPS app.
