The Virginia Department of Transportation has announced that there will be nighttime lane closures on I-395 near the Pentagon from September 2 to September 6, weather permitting. The closures are necessary for bridge project work.
On the southbound I-395 general purpose lanes at the bridge over South Fern Street, located just beyond southbound Exit 8A to Pentagon South Parking, Route 27/Washington Boulevard, and South Arlington Ridge Road, one lane will be closed from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Tuesday, September 2. Two lanes will then be closed from 10 p.m. Tuesday until 5 a.m. Wednesday, September 3. The same schedule will repeat on Wednesday night into Thursday morning.
For northbound I-395 general purpose lanes at the bridge over Route 110, one lane will close from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. on both Tuesday and Wednesday nights (September 2 and 3), followed by two-lane closures each night from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. the next morning.
The ramp from southbound Route 110 (Richmond Highway) to northbound I-395 will remain open during this period; however, drivers using this ramp are asked to use extra caution when merging onto I-395.
Further northbound closures are scheduled at the bridge over South Fern Street—about half a mile beyond northbound Exit 8C to Route 1 South, Pentagon City, Crystal City, and Reagan National Airport—on Thursday and Friday nights (September 4 and 5), with similar one-lane and two-lane closure schedules continuing through Saturday morning.
At least one general purpose lane will remain open at all times in each affected location.
According to VDOT, “The lane closures are part of a project to close joints and make minor repairs to several bridges along I-395.”
Drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians are advised by VDOT: “Drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians are reminded to use caution when traveling in active work zones. Be alert to new traffic patterns and limit distractions.”
