The Hylton Performing Arts Center at George Mason University hosted its annual gala, An Evening Above the Clouds, on April 25. The event featured a cocktail reception in the Cumulus Lounge with signature drinks and live piano music by College of Visual and Performing Arts alumnus Charlie Murdock. Guests also viewed an art walk curated by School of Art graduate student and U.S. Air Force veteran Steven Luu.

Attendees then enjoyed a three-course dinner on the Merchant Hall stage, surrounded by floral designs from artist and faculty member Patrick Sargent. Entertainment included an aerialist performance, a string quartet from Mason Music Productions, and a performance by Dewberry School of Music student Joshua Slutsky.

Three honorees—Sheyna Burt, Daniel Tucciarone, and Thomas Sabal—were recognized during the evening for their contributions to the arts community at the Hylton Center. Veterans and the Arts Initiative Program Director Niyati Dhokai shared participant testimonials about the program’s impact. Dhokai said it “affirms something simple and powerful: that the arts can honor service not only through reflection, but by carrying the integrity of service into the future.”

George Mason President Gregory Washington addressed guests after being introduced by Dean Rick Davis. Washington said: “By supporting the Hylton Center, you’re doing even more than [supporting the arts]. You are investing in imagination. You are investing in innovation. You are investing in education.”

Dean Rick Davis highlighted a 65% increase in participation for Veterans and the Arts Initiative programs as well as achieving a $15 million long-term endowment goal before introducing incoming Executive Director Carolyn Hays.

The gala’s Raise Your Paddle event raised over $40,000 specifically for Veterans and the Arts Initiative programs; overall fundraising reached $165,000 through additional activities such as a silent auction.

Afterward, guests attended an afterparty featuring music from DJ Rio of DC Rhythms along with refreshments provided by local businesses.
