The Virginia Tech baseball team secured a 6-2 victory over California on May 2, clinching the series at Evans Diamond at Stu Gordon Stadium in Berkeley. The Hokies took control early with two home runs in the third inning, establishing a lead they maintained for the rest of the game.
The game was highlighted by solo and three-run home runs from Sam Gates and Henry Cooke, respectively. Gates opened the third inning with a solo shot against strong winds coming in from right field. Later in the inning, Cooke capped off a two-out rally with his three-run homer to left field.
Both Gates and Cooke recorded their fourth home runs of the season during this matchup. Their offensive efforts were supported by starting pitcher Logan Eisenreich, who began his outing by retiring ten consecutive batters. Eisenreich matched his career high with eight strikeouts over five innings and limited Cal to one run on two hits while throwing 66 pitches.
Virginia Tech improved its record to 25-20 overall and 13-13 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The win marked their fourth straight victory and ninth out of their last eleven games. Cal dropped to an even 23-23 overall record with a conference mark of 7-16.
The teams will meet again on Sunday, May 3, as Virginia Tech aims for its first ACC sweep of the season at Cal. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. Pacific Time.
