The Hokies women’s tennis team defeated Louisville 4-2 in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Championship on April 14. The match took place on Tuesday morning and secured Virginia Tech’s advancement to the second round.

This victory is significant as it allows the Hokies to continue their run in the ACC Championship, a key tournament for collegiate tennis teams in the conference.

The day began with a doubles win from Arina Gamretkaia and Özlem Uslu, who overcame Berta Miret and Elena Noguero with a score of 6-2 on Court 1. Freshmen Elizaveta Castillo and Alston Myatt followed up with a close win on Court 3, coming back from behind in a tiebreaker to secure victory at 13-11 after saving multiple match points.

In singles play, Linda Ziets-Segura earned another point for Virginia Tech by defeating Rebekkah Gaines in straight sets, while Uslu achieved a three-set reverse sweep against Alice Otis after dropping the first set. Louisville managed to claim points on Courts 3 and 5 but could not overcome Tech’s momentum. Gamretkaia clinched the overall win for her team by winning both sets against Germany Davis through tiebreakers, each time coming back from being down late in each set.

Castillo’s singles match was left unfinished as she led her opponent into a third set when play concluded due to Virginia Tech having already secured enough points for victory.

Looking ahead, Virginia Tech will face Stanford in the second round of the ACC Championship scheduled for Wednesday, April 15 at 3:30 p.m.
