A high wind advisory has been issued for the Robert O. Norris Bridge, which facilitates Route 3 traffic over the Rappahannock River between Lancaster and Middlesex counties. The advisory specifically cautions high-profile vehicles such as tractor-trailers, box trucks, and large vans and SUVs against crossing the bridge. Vehicles carrying small or empty loads are particularly vulnerable.
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) monitors wind speeds at several major river crossings in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula areas. These include Downing Bridge on Route 360 over the Rappahannock River, Eltham Bridge on Route 30/Route 33 over the Pamunkey River, Gwynn’s Island on Route 223 bridge over Milford Haven, and Lord Delaware Bridge on Route 33 over the Mattaponi River.
According to VDOT guidelines, a high wind advisory is posted if sustained winds reach 30 mph for 30 minutes or if there are frequent gusts of 45 mph or more. In these conditions, high-profile vehicles should avoid crossing affected bridges. If sustained winds exceed 45 mph for a period of 15 minutes, a bridge closure notice will be issued; however, bridges will not be physically barricaded.
Advisories and closures will be communicated via message boards at the bridges.
In response to potential travel hazards from forecasted heavy rain and high winds in Fredericksburg area regions like Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula, VDOT crews have mobilized for emergency response. Tree contractors are also assisting with tree and debris removal efforts.
