Henrico County Public Library announced on May 14 a series of health and wellness programs and resources for older adults in recognition of Older Americans Month. The library is offering new activities, including Disc Golf 101 for Older Adults, along with recommended reading materials and information about county services.
The initiative aims to support the growing population of residents aged 65 and older in Henrico County. According to the United States Census Bureau, nearly 18% of older adults living in Henrico are age 65 or above, with projections indicating continued growth in this demographic.
Disc Golf 101 for Older Adults will take place on Saturday, May 23 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. at Tuckahoe Library. The program will be led by Tim Eck, owner of Good Sports Disc Golf store and an organizer of tournaments such as Tour de Richmond. Eck will introduce participants to the fundamentals and history of disc golf. The event is designed as an accessible activity that benefits both physical health and mental well-being.
Library representatives say disc golf offers opportunities for seniors to stay active while enjoying nature, noting that it incorporates cardiovascular exercise, strength training, stretching, and core stability—components highlighted by organizations like the Mayo Clinic. Additional health-related library programs include chronic pain self-management workshops with The SPAN Center, meditation classes, mindfulness through music sessions, and fall prevention workshops.
The library’s collection features books focused on aging well such as “Golden Years” by James Chappel; “Mayo Clinic on Healthy Aging” by Nathan K. LeBrasseur; “Outlive” by Peter Attia; among others. Community members can also access information about local assistance programs through Henrico’s Outreach & Engagement department.
Henrico County Public Library enhances community life through offerings like homework help, tax assistance and job search support; features various meeting spaces for groups of different sizes; provides mobile library services to retirement facilities and day care centers; has facilities certified under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program; operates nine locations throughout its service area; and works to encourage reading, lifelong learning and community enrichment by connecting people to vital information according to the official website.
With these initiatives during Older Americans Month, Henrico County Public Library seeks to promote healthy aging while fostering engagement among older adults.
