Travelers heading to the Hillsville Flea Market during Memorial Day weekend should expect significant traffic delays and increased pedestrian activity, according to a May 21 announcement. The event is scheduled from Friday, May 22 through Monday, May 25. People who are not attending the flea market are encouraged to avoid the area.

Thousands of visitors are anticipated along a one-mile section of Route 58 Business in Hillsville. This influx will lead to crowded sidewalks and slow-moving, bumper-to-bumper vehicle traffic throughout the vicinity.

Drivers are advised to exercise extra caution, be alert for police officers directing traffic, and pay attention to electronic message boards placed in the area.

The Virginia Department of Transportation manages one of the nation’s largest state highway systems and provides services such as highway maintenance and traffic management through systems like Virginia 511, according to the official website. The agency oversees planning, construction, and maintenance of roads across Virginia.

Virginia Department of Transportation operates from its headquarters at 1221 East Broad Street in Richmond and has evolved since its origins as the State Highway Commission in 1906 into an organization responsible for building and maintaining transportation infrastructure across tens of thousands of lane-miles statewide, according to the official website.
