Congressman Brett Guthrie and Congressman John Joyce have announced an upcoming hearing to examine the U.S. organ procurement and transplant system. The hearing, titled “Ensuring Patient Safety: Oversight of the U.S. Organ Procurement and Transplant System,” is set for July 22, 2025, at the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington, D.C.
The focus of the hearing is to address concerns about patient safety, transparency, and management within the organ procurement system. “The Committee is continuing oversight of our nation’s organ procurement and transplant system,” said Guthrie and Joyce. They emphasized the importance of understanding how reforms can be implemented to improve the system.
Dr. Maureen McBride, CEO of the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), will testify before the Subcommittee on Oversight & Investigations. Dr. McBride expressed her commitment to supporting improvements in organ donation and transplant processes. She highlighted innovations such as the Offer Filters tool and a predictive analytics tool designed to enhance efficiency and increase organ use rates.
Dr. McBride also outlined four key recommendations for strengthening the system: implementing a patient-safety reporting system, automating deceased donor referrals nationwide, establishing a tracking system for organs in transit, and migrating the OPTN computer system to the cloud.
“The reforms that UNOS is leading and endorsing will bolster trust in the system through improvements that are meaningful and measurable,” said Dr. McBride.
The hearing will be open to both public attendance and online streaming.
