Route 620 (Harrison Road) in Spotsylvania County will be closed to through traffic overnight for two consecutive evenings next week. The closure will take place between Route 627 (Gordon Road) and Route 610 (Old Plank Road) from 9 p.m. Tuesday, August 19 until 5 a.m. Wednesday, August 20, and again from 9 p.m. Wednesday, August 20 until 5 a.m. Thursday, August 21.
During the closure period, travelers and emergency responders will still be able to access homes along Harrison Road between Gordon Road and Old Plank Road as well as on Route 1196 (Stansbury Drive). Residents are advised to use the Gordon Road intersection to access Harrison Road during these times, as no access will be available from the Old Plank Road intersection.
All through traffic on Harrison Road will be detoured via Gordon Road and Old Plank Road. Old Plank Road itself will remain open at the Harrison Road intersection.
According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), construction crews will install a water line across Harrison Road near the Old Plank Road intersection during these closures. This work is part of an ongoing project by VDOT to widen Harrison Road to four lanes between Gordon Road and Old Plank Road.
Construction on this widening project began in September 2024 and is expected to finish in late summer of 2026. The $11.2 million project also includes building a center turn lane along Harrison Road, adding more travel lanes at both the Old Plank and Gordon road intersections, extending existing turn lanes at those intersections, constructing sidewalks along Harrison Road, and installing pedestrian crossing signals and crosswalks at key intersections.
