The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced a series of scheduled road closures and lane restrictions in the Hampton Roads District for the week of August 31 to September 6, 2025. These measures will affect major interstates, ramps, bridges, and tunnels across the region.
VDOT will suspend many highway work zones and lift most lane closures on interstates and other primary roads in Virginia for holiday travel from noon on Friday, August 29 until noon on Tuesday, September 2. According to VDOT: “VDOT will suspend many highway work zones and lift most lane closures on interstates and other major roads in Virginia for holiday travel from noon, Friday, Aug. 29 until noon, Tuesday, Sept. 2.Read the statewide holiday travel release here.”
The planned closures are subject to change depending on weather conditions or other factors.
Key projects include alternating single-lane closures at the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel (I-664) during nighttime hours between September 2-4. There will also be various ramp and lane closures along I-64 in areas such as Virginia Beach, Newport News, James City County, Hampton Roads Express Lanes construction zones, Norfolk Reversible Express Lanes segments, and around project sites like HRBT Expansion Project (more information is available at https://hrbtexpansion.org/).

For those traveling through ongoing construction related to the Hampton Roads Express Lanes project or seeking updates about long-term traffic impacts across these projects in the region—including interactive maps—additional resources are provided at https://64expresslanes.org/trafficalerts.asp.
Long-term shifts remain in place along several corridors. For example, there are continuous single-lane reductions between Settlers Landing Road/Woodland Road (exit 267) and LaSalle Avenue (exit 265A), as well as rerouted traffic patterns over Hampton River bridges with all vehicles shifted onto reopened westbound structures.
Additional ramp restrictions impact drivers entering or exiting I-564 near Naval Station Norfolk or using Route 17 in York County during specified daytime hours.
Travelers are encouraged to check VDOT’s official channels for real-time updates before setting out.
