The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced a series of scheduled lane and ramp closures across the Hampton Roads region from March 1 to March 7, 2026. These closures will affect interstates, ramps, bridges, tunnels, and several primary roads.

Planned work includes single-lane closures at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel on I-64 in both directions during overnight hours. The Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel on I-664 will have alternating single-lane closures in both directions between March 2 and March 5 during nighttime hours, as well as mobile single-lane closures northbound on March 3.

On the High Rise Bridge along I-64, drivers should expect brief eastbound stoppages on March 4 between 10 a.m. and noon. Maintenance schedules for the Downtown Tunnel (I-264), Midtown Tunnel (Route 58), and MLK Expressway (Route 164) can be found by visiting Elizabeth River Tunnels.

Full on-ramp closures are planned for I-64 in Chesapeake from Greenbrier Parkway north to I-64 east overnight February 27–28. Widening work continues on I-64 Gap Segment C in James City County with nightly single-lane closures between the New Kent County-James City County line and Route 199/Lightfoot through March 7.

Motorists using the Norfolk Reversible Express Lanes on I-64 should prepare for continuous full closure in both directions from February 27 at 8 p.m. until March 2 at 3 a.m., with additional nightly and daytime closures throughout the week.

Eastbound Express Lane closures are scheduled between Indian River Road (exit 286) and I-464 (exit 291) in Chesapeake on March 3–4 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. The HREL Hampton Project will bring multiple ramp closures along I-64 near Settlers Landing Road/Woodland Road, Rip Rap Road/Armistead Avenue/Langley AFB, and King Street at the overpass.

Alternating single-lane closures are expected along various segments of I-64 including Newport News/Hampton, Norfolk, Chesapeake Boulevard, Granby Street, LaSalle Avenue, Mallory Street, Patrol Road, Little Creek Road, Tidewater Drive and Willoughby Bay Bridge during this period.

Other notable projects include long-term traffic shifts and lane reductions around construction zones such as those affecting LaSalle Avenue from North Armistead Avenue to Michigan Drive; outside lanes between Mallory Street and Settlers Landing Road; median shifts near Patrol Road; and changes to traffic patterns near Tidewater Drive in Norfolk.

Closures also extend beyond interstates: Route 164 eastbound in Portsmouth will see overnight single-lane restrictions; Route 199 at Pocahontas Trail in Williamsburg/James City County will have alternating daytime lane closures; Route 58 in Greensville County will experience alternating lane restrictions; and southbound Route 17 in York County will be reduced to one lane during certain daytime hours.

According to VDOT’s official website, its role includes building, maintaining, and operating Virginia’s roads, bridges, and tunnels for safe transportation. The agency manages one of the largest state highway systems nationwide with tens of thousands of lane-miles across Virginia. VDOT provides services such as highway maintenance and traffic management through systems like Virginia’s statewide travel information service “511,” which offers real-time updates via phone or smartphone app (source). VDOT also oversees land-use permits along state routes (source).

The department is headquartered at 1221 East Broad Street in Richmond. It evolved from the State Highway Commission established in the early twentieth century to manage Virginia’s growing transportation infrastructure (source).

Travelers are encouraged to check 511.vdot.virginia.gov, use the VDOT smartphone app or dial “511” for up-to-date information about all current maintenance activities or unexpected changes due to weather or other factors.
