The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has released its weekly traffic alert for the Hampton Roads District, covering scheduled road and lane closures from August 3 to August 9, 2025. The notice includes full closures of interstates, ramps, bridges, and primary roads, as well as lane closures at major bridge-tunnels in the region.
According to VDOT, “Scheduled closures are subject to change based on weather conditions and other factors.”
For the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel on I-64, alternating single-lane closures westbound are planned from July 28-31 between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. The Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel on I-664 will see alternating single-lane closures in both directions on August 4 and August 6 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., along with mobile southbound lane closures on August 5 during daytime hours.
The James River Bridge (Route 17) will have mobile single-lane closures in both directions overnight on August 5. The George P. Coleman Bridge will have alternating single-lane closures in both directions from August 4-8 during daytime hours.
Motorists seeking information about maintenance schedules for the Downtown Tunnel (I-264), Midtown Tunnel (Route 58), and MLK Expressway (Route 164) are directed to visit the Elizabeth River Tunnels website. For updates related to the HRBT Expansion Project or details about express lanes projects and their impacts, drivers can consult dedicated project pages online.
Several significant interstate projects are underway throughout Hampton Roads:
On I-64 in Chesapeake, full ramp closures from I-64 west to I-464 north are scheduled nightly from August 4-8. In Virginia Beach, there will be full on-ramp closures from Indian River Road to I-64 east between August 3-7 each night.
James City County’s I-64 Gap Segment C Widening project involves brief intermittent stoppages along Six Mount Zion Road and Rochambeau Drive during daytime hours throughout the week. There is also a long-term closure of the Lightfoot Park and Ride in York County as well as ongoing temporary traffic shifts along segments of I-64.
In Hampton, work related to the Hampton Roads Express Lanes HREL Hampton 4C Project includes multiple ramp and mainline lane closures as well as several full overnight interstate shutdowns between exits such as Rip Rap Road, Settlers Landing Road, Woodland Road, Mallory Street, LaSalle Avenue, and Armistead Avenue through early morning hours next week.
Norfolk will experience continuous alternating single-lane closures on I-64 near Granby Street and Chesapeake Boulevard starting as early as August 1 through early morning August 3. Multiple off-ramp and on-ramp closures affecting access points such as Granby Street, Little Creek Road, Tidewater Drive, Patrol Road, and others are planned through much of next week during overnight periods.
Express Lane operations for Norfolk Reversible Express Lanes include full direction closure continuously beginning at nightfall Friday until early Monday morning with additional daytimes affected later in the week.
Other notable impacts include long-term traffic pattern changes near major intersections like J. Clyde Morris Boulevard in Newport News/Hampton due to ongoing express lanes construction; multi-week ramp detours for Ballentine Boulevard off I-264 westbound; continuous lane reductions for resurfacing or repair work along sections of I-95 northbound in Sussex County; and brief stoppages at Route 17/134 ramps in York County during daytime hours midweek.
Travelers are encouraged by VDOT to check specific project websites or contact local authorities for real-time updates before planning their routes.
