The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has released its weekly traffic alert for the Hampton Roads District, covering scheduled road closures and lane restrictions from January 4 to January 10, 2026. The alert includes information on full closures of interstates, ramps, bridges, primary roads, and lane closures at major bridge-tunnels and river crossings in the region.

Closures are subject to change depending on weather conditions and other factors.

On the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel (I-664), alternating single-lane closures will take place southbound from January 5 to 8 between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., and northbound from January 6 to 8 during the same hours. The James River Bridge (Route 17) will have alternating single-lane closures southbound from January 5 to 9 between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., as well as a northbound single-lane closure on January 5 from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m.

Motorists are advised to check maintenance schedules for the Downtown Tunnel (I-264), Midtown Tunnel (Route 58), and MLK Expressway (Route 164) via Elizabeth River Tunnels resources. Updates on lane closures related to the HRBT Expansion Project can be found on its project website.

On I-64 in Chesapeake/Virginia Beach, brief intermittent stoppages are planned westbound between Battlefield Boulevard (exit 290) and Indian River Road (exit 286) from January 9 to 11 between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.

In James City County, long-term temporary traffic shifts continue both eastbound and westbound on I-64 near Route 199/Lightfoot (exit 234) through the New Kent/James City County line.

The Hampton Roads Express Lanes projects will also cause various ramp closures and lane reductions across multiple segments of I-64 in Hampton, Norfolk, Newport News, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, and surrounding areas during overnight hours throughout the week. Specific details include:

– Full ramp closures in Hampton for exits including Armistead Avenue/LaSalle Avenue (265B), Rip Rap Road/Armistead Avenue/Langley AFB (265C), Settlers Landing Road/Woodland Road (267), Mallory Street access points, with additional alternating single-lane closures.
– In Norfolk’s HREL segment, there will be alternating single-lane closures continuously from Granby Street (exit 276) to Chesapeake Boulevard (exit 278), along with several off-ramp and on-ramp full closures.
– The Norfolk Reversible Express Lanes will be fully closed in both directions during specified nighttime hours.
– Newport News/Hampton’s HREL project involves multiple lane closures at Denbigh Boulevard as well as at J. Clyde Morris Boulevard through Hampton Roads Center Parkway.
– In Chesapeake’s HREL area, express lanes will be closed westbound between Bowers Hill interchange (exit 299) and I-264 (exit 284) on January 6–7 overnight; eastbound lanes close January 7–8 overnight.
– On I-464 in Chesapeake, full on-ramp closures from Route 17 north to I‑464 north are scheduled during daytime hours.
– On I‑264 east between Bowers Hill interchange in Chesapeake and Greenwood Drive in Portsmouth there is a full closure planned for January 8 overnight.

Other notable work includes alternating single-lane closures on Route 199 at the I‑64 interchange near exit 242 in York County from January 7–9 during daytime hours.
