The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced a series of scheduled road closures and lane restrictions in the Hampton Roads District for the week of August 17-23, 2025. These closures will affect major interstates, ramps, bridges, and tunnels throughout the region.

Among the key projects impacting travel is ongoing work at several bridge-tunnels. The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel on I-64 will have single-lane closures westbound from August 18-21 between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., with alternating single-lane closures eastbound on August 19 during the same hours. The Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel on I-664 will see alternating mobile single-lane closures in both directions from August 18-21 at night, as well as southbound daytime lane restrictions on August 19.

The George P. Coleman Bridge on Route 17 is scheduled for alternating single-lane closures in both directions from August 18-22 during daytime hours. For details about maintenance schedules for the Downtown Tunnel (I-264), Midtown Tunnel (Route 58), and MLK Expressway (Route 164), VDOT directs drivers to visit Elizabeth River Tunnels’ website.

Several projects along I-64 are also underway. The Gap Segment C Widening project in James City County will result in nighttime single-lane closures eastbound and intermittent stoppages on Rochambeau Drive and Six Mount Zion Road during daytime hours through much of the week. Additionally, long-term traffic shifts remain in place near Lightfoot Park and Ride in York County.

As part of the Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) construction, multiple full ramp closures are planned along I-64 between Settlers Landing Road/Woodland Road and Mallory Street during overnight hours from August 17 to August 25. Alternating lane closures and brief stoppages are expected along this corridor as crews continue work related to HREL improvements.

In Norfolk, express lanes along I-64 will be closed continuously overnight at various times between Granby Street and Chesapeake Boulevard, with additional ramp closures affecting access to Granby Street, Little Creek Road, Tidewater Drive, Patrol Road, and other routes throughout the week.

Express Lane operations westbound between I-264 (exit 284) and Bowers Hill interchange (exit 299) will be fully closed overnight on August 17; eastbound lanes will close nightly from August 18–21 for ongoing work.

Additional interstate impacts include full off-ramp closure from I-264 west to Newtown Road in Virginia Beach during overnight hours starting August 19 through early morning of August 24; full on-ramp closure from Route 17 north to I-464 north in Chesapeake daily; long-term ramp closure from LaSalle Avenue to I-64 east; as well as continuing traffic shifts reducing lanes along segments of I-64 near Armistead Avenue.

On secondary roads outside major interstates, Route 58 in Southampton County is scheduled for single-lane daytime closures between Drewry Road and Three Creeks Road on August16–17.

Drivers are advised that all scheduled work may change depending on weather or other factors. For up-to-date information about these—and many other—lane restrictions required for maintenance or construction across Hampton Roads, motorists can visit https://511.vdot.virginia.gov/, use the VDOT511 smartphone app or dial “511” by phone.
