The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has released its weekly traffic alert for the Hampton Roads District, covering scheduled road and lane closures from August 24 to August 30, 2025. The alert includes details on full closures of interstates, ramps, bridges, primary roads, and lane closures at major bridge-tunnels in the region.

VDOT announced that it will suspend many highway work zones and lift most lane closures on interstates and other major roads across Virginia for holiday travel starting at noon on Friday, August 29 until noon on Tuesday, September 2. According to VDOT: “VDOT will suspend many highway work zones and lift most lane closures on interstates and other major roads in Virginia for holiday travel from noon, Friday, Aug. 29 until noon, Tuesday, Sept. 2.Read the statewide holiday travel release here.”

Among the scheduled projects are alternating mobile single-lane closures at the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel (I-664) from August 25 to August 28 during nighttime hours. The George P. Coleman Bridge (Route 17) will also see alternating single-lane closures in both directions during daytime hours within the same period.

Drivers are advised to check maintenance schedules for the Downtown Tunnel (I-264), Midtown Tunnel (Route 58), and MLK Expressway (Route 164) through Elizabeth River Tunnels’ official resources. Updates about ongoing construction can be found on the HRBT Expansion Project website.

On I-64 in Virginia Beach, full ramp closures from Indian River Road to I-64 east are planned overnight between August 24 and August 27. In Newport News, there will be full ramp closures at Jefferson Avenue (Route 143) along I-64 west between August 25 and August 28.

Widening work continues on I-64 Gap Segment C in James City County with nightly single-lane closures eastbound between New Kent County-James City County line and Croaker Road (exit 231), as well as westbound between Route 199/Lightfoot (exit 234) and New Kent County-James City County line.

The Hampton Roads Express Lanes project is causing additional impacts throughout various segments of I-64. Information about specific lane closures related to this project is available via the Hampton Roads Express Lanes project page as well as an interactive map displaying long-term impacts across different construction areas.

For drivers traveling through Norfolk or using reversible express lanes along I-64, several full ramp or mainline closures are scheduled overnight throughout the week. Some long-term traffic shifts remain in place near key exits such as Tidewater Drive and Patrol Road.

In Chesapeake, there will be full express lane closure eastbound between I-464 (exit 291) and Bowers Hill interchange (exit 299) overnight on August 27; another closure is set for eastbound lanes between I-264 (exit 284) and I-464 on August 28 during similar hours.

Other notable projects include periodic single-lane or short-term stoppages along Route 13 in Accomack County from Turkey Run Road to Temperanceville Road during daytime hours throughout the week.

All schedules are subject to change based on weather conditions or unforeseen factors affecting construction progress.
