The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has released its weekly traffic alert for the Hampton Roads District, covering December 28, 2025, to January 3, 2026. The update details planned closures and traffic shifts on interstates, ramps, bridges, and primary roads in the region.
VDOT will suspend many highway work zones and lift most lane closures on major roads during holiday travel periods. These suspensions will take place from noon on December 24 until noon on December 26, and again from noon on December 31 until noon on January 2. “Read the statewide holiday travel release here.”
The agency notes that all scheduled closures are subject to change due to weather conditions or other factors.
Bridge and tunnel updates include a single-lane closure westbound at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (I-64) on December 30 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., as well as alternating mobile single-lane closures in both directions at the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel (I-664) on December 29 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Maintenance schedules for Elizabeth River Tunnels can be found through their respective resources.
Long-term traffic shifts continue along I-64 Gap Segment C Widening in James City County. Both eastbound and westbound lanes between Route 199/Lightfoot (exit 234) and the New Kent/James City County line remain under temporary realignment.
In Hampton Roads Express Lanes projects along I-64, several long-term lane reductions are ongoing between Settlers Landing Road/Woodland Road (exit 267) and LaSalle Avenue (exit 265A). There are also full off-ramp closures from I-64 west to Granby Street (exit 276A), Little Creek Road (exit 276C), and Tidewater Drive (exits 277A/277B) during nighttime hours between December 28–30.
Alternating single-lane closures are scheduled along I-564 from I-64 to Terminal Boulevard in both directions during evening and overnight hours across several dates.
On I-464 in Chesapeake, full northbound ramp closures from Route 17 to I-464 north are set for December 29–30 and January 3 during daytime hours.
Additional notable work includes alternating mobile single-lane closures along Route 164 (Western Freeway) in Portsmouth between College Drive and Martin Luther King Freeway during overnight hours on select dates.
VDOT is responsible for planning, building, maintaining, and operating Virginia’s transportation infrastructure of roads, bridges, and tunnels. It manages one of the largest state-maintained highway systems in the country while delivering services such as highway maintenance, traffic management through systems like Virginia’s “511,” public access to road condition data, and oversight of land-use permits along state routes. More information about VDOT’s operations can be found at its official website.
Scheduled lane restrictions may change based on weather or other circumstances affecting construction timelines.
