The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has released its weekly traffic alert for the Hampton Roads District, covering August 10 through August 16, 2025. The notice details scheduled lane and ramp closures affecting major interstates, bridges, and tunnels throughout the region. These planned closures are subject to change based on weather conditions or other unforeseen factors.

For the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel on I-64, alternating single-lane closures will take place in both directions from August 13 to 14 between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. The Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel on I-664 will have mobile single-lane closures northbound on August 12 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and in both directions during overnight hours on August 13 and 14.

On the George P. Coleman Bridge (Route 17), motorists should expect northbound single-lane closures with brief stoppages as early as 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. on August 8-9, along with similar southbound restrictions during the same period and additional daytime southbound lane closures from August 11-15.

The High Rise Bridge (I-64) will see alternating westbound lane closures overnight from August 11 to August 14. Maintenance schedules for the Elizabeth River Tunnels—including Downtown Tunnel (I-264), Midtown Tunnel (Route 58), and MLK Expressway (Route 164)—are available at their respective website.

Several interstate ramps will also be affected. In Chesapeake, full ramp closures from I-64 west to I-464 north (exit 291A) are scheduled nightly between August 11 and August 15, while Virginia Beach will see full eastbound on-ramp closures from Indian River Road to I-64 east between August10–14 during nighttime hours.

Ongoing construction projects such as the I-64 Gap Segment C Widening in James City County continue to cause lane shifts and temporary closure of park-and-ride facilities along portions of Route199/Lightfoot (exit234) through Old Stage Road (exit227). Motorists can find more information about these long-term impacts via VDOT’s traffic alerts.

Projects like the Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) include various ramp closures in Hampton for both directions of I-64 near Armistead Avenue/Langley AFB, Settlers Landing Road/Woodland Road, Mallory Street, and LaSalle Avenue throughout next week’s overnight periods. Additional intermittent stoppages are planned between Mallory Street and LaSalle Avenue early mornings from August12–16.

Long-term traffic pattern changes continue at several points along I-64 due to bridge work at the Hampton River bridges; all lanes are currently shifted onto reopened westbound structures in that area.

In Norfolk under HREL Project1A, multiple off-ramp and on-ramp closures are planned near Granby Street, Chesapeake Boulevard, Little Creek Road, Tidewater Drive, Patrol Road, and Terminal Boulevard across various dates within this period—often beginning after7p.m.and ending by5a.m.The Norfolk Reversible Express Lanes will experience continuous closure in both directions starting8p.m.August8 until3a.m.August11,and again overnight through mid-August.

Further up I-64 toward Newport News/Hampton under Projects4A/4B,multiple nighttime lane reductions are expected near Mercury Boulevard,Hampton Roads Center Parkway,J.Clyde Morris Boulevard, and Victory Boulevard.A long-term center-lane closure begins as early as overnight Aug11 at J.Clyde Morris Blvd(exit258).

Other affected highways include:
-I‑464(Chesapeake):Full ramp/on-ramp restrictions Aug11–16
-I‑264(Norfolk):Off-ramp closure westbound at Ballentine Blvd continues through mid-August
-I‑95(Sussex County):Continuous northbound single-lane closure between Route631(Jarratt Ave/Henry Rd)(exit20)and Route645(Owen Rd)(exit24),with associated ramp shutdowns beginning8p.m.Aug10through9a.m.Aug15

Motorists should plan alternate routes where possible or consult VDOT resources for updates before traveling during these periods.
