The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has released its weekly traffic alert for the Hampton Roads District, detailing planned road and lane closures from November 16 to November 22, 2025. The notice includes scheduled closures on interstates, ramps, bridges, and primary roads across the region.

Motorists are advised that all listed closures are subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances. VDOT recommends drivers stay informed about additional maintenance-related lane closures by visiting 511.vdot.virginia.gov, using the VDOT 511 smartphone app, or dialing 511.

Significant overnight work is planned at major bridge-tunnel crossings. The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel on I-64 will see alternating single-lane closures in both directions nightly from November 16 through November 20 between 9 p.m. and as late as 5 a.m. The Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel on I-664 will also have alternating single-lane closures in both directions during similar hours from November 17 to November 20, with an additional southbound closure on November 21 during daytime hours.

The James River Bridge (Route 17) is scheduled for southbound mobile single-lane closures on November 17 and November 18 between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

For updates on Downtown Tunnel (I-264), Midtown Tunnel (Route 58), and MLK Expressway (Route 164) maintenance schedules, drivers should refer to Elizabeth River Tunnels’ official channels. Updates related to the HRBT Expansion Project can be found on its dedicated website.

Ramp and lane closures will affect various segments of I-64 throughout Virginia Beach, James City County, Hampton, Norfolk, Newport News/Hampton area projects, and Chesapeake:

– In Virginia Beach, full ramp closures are set for eastbound I-64 at Indian River Road nightly from November 16 through November 20.
– On I-64 Gap Segment C Widening in James City County, there will be single-lane night-time closures in both directions between New Kent County-James City County line and Route 199/Lightfoot.
– The Hampton Roads Express Lanes projects involve several long-term traffic shifts and temporary lane reductions; more details can be accessed via the project’s web page or interactive map.
– Multiple ramp and lane restrictions are scheduled as part of HREL’s Hampton (4C), Norfolk (1A), Newport News/Hampton (4A/4B), and Chesapeake sections.

Other key routes affected include Route 58 in Suffolk—where overnight full eastbound closures will take place—and Route 164 in Portsmouth with single-lane nighttime restrictions between major interchanges. In Accomack County/Tasley, a roundabout at the intersection of several local roads will close continuously starting November 16 through as late as November 20.

Drivers are encouraged to review detailed detour information provided by VDOT for each closure period.
