Scheduled road closures and traffic shifts are expected across the Hampton Roads District from July 27 to August 2, 2025. These disruptions will affect major interstates, ramps, bridges, and tunnels.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) advises travelers to check for updates on closures due to weather or other factors by visiting their website or using the VDOT 511 app.

On I-64 in Chesapeake, there will be a full ramp closure from I-64 east to I-464 north on July 28 between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. In Virginia Beach, on-ramp closures from Indian River Road to I-64 east are scheduled nightly from July 27 through July 31.

The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel will have alternating single-lane closures westbound from July 28-31 during nighttime hours. Similarly, the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel will experience southbound lane closures during the same period.

For those traveling on Route 17 at the James River Bridge, single-lane closures in both directions are planned for July 29-31 during daytime hours.

Interstate work includes multiple lane closures as part of ongoing projects such as the HRBT Expansion Project and HREL initiatives in Norfolk and Newport News/Hampton areas. These include temporary traffic shifts and long-term lane reductions affecting various sections of I-64.

Additionally, there are significant ramp closures along I-564 near Granby Street and Tidewater Drive with varying schedules throughout this period.

Travelers should expect intermittent stoppages on certain stretches of I-64 and consult VDOT resources for detailed information about each project’s impact on their commute.
