The Greater Williamsburg Sports and Events Center will officially open with a grand celebration on June 24, according to an April 29 announcement. The event will mark the beginning of operations for the new facility, which aims to boost sports tourism, community programming, and economic activity in the region.

The opening ceremony is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. and will feature a ribbon-cutting with local leaders, guided tours of the center, youth sports demonstrations, and family-friendly activities. Admission is free and open to the public until 8:00 p.m., inviting residents, business leaders, and visitors to explore what organizers describe as a premier destination for competition and community engagement.

Located next to the Colonial Williamsburg Regional Visitor Center, the facility includes versatile hardwood courts, flexible event spaces, modern amenities for athletes and spectators, and capacity for local through national competitions. The project represents collaboration among York County, James City County, the City of Williamsburg, Visit Williamsburg, and the Williamsburg Hotel & Motel Association.

Scott Stevens, chair of Historic Triangle Recreational Facilities Authority (HTRFA), said: “The Greater Williamsburg Sports and Events Center is the result of true regional collaboration and long-term commitment to our community’s future. By working together across jurisdictions, we’ve built a destination that will elevate opportunity, drive economic growth, and create meaningful experiences for residents and visitors alike.”

In addition to athletic events such as tournaments or competitions that are expected to attract traveling teams from outside areas—and thus drive significant economic activity—the center plans year-round programming including expos, corporate events, and wellness initiatives. Its proximity to historic sites as well as accommodations further positions it within a growing market for sports tourism.

HTRFA oversees leasing property procurement construction financing management operations while KemperSports manages over 240 venues nationwide including golf courses private clubs resorts according their official information.
