Greater Richmond was highlighted on May 4 as a major center for the travel insurance industry, with Allianz Partners naming the region its North American headquarters and describing it as the “travel insurance capital of the world.” Jeff Wright, CEO of Allianz Partners North America, discussed the company’s longstanding presence in Greater Richmond during an episode of Richmond NEXT with Jennifer Wakefield, President and CEO of Greater Richmond Partnership.

The discussion focused on why companies that specialize in risk mitigation continue to choose Greater Richmond. Wright said stability, workforce quality, and cost-effectiveness were key reasons behind Allianz’s decision to remain in the area. “It’s been pretty stable and growing here in Richmond since then,” Wright said. He added that “companies are looking for some piece of the business that can be stable and certain and Richmond offers that in a lot of ways.”

Allianz Partners is part of a group of finance and insurance employers—including Markel Group, Capital One, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and others—that have contributed to making Greater Richmond one of the most concentrated financial-services markets east of the Mississippi River. Wakefield noted during their conversation that companies focused on mitigating risk see value in locating operations within this market.

Wright also described how resilience has become increasingly important: “It’s not just about efficiency anymore, it’s also about resilience.” He emphasized Greater Richmond’s reputation within Allianz as a hub for travel insurance expertise: “We’re the largest provider of travel insurance in the world, so [Richmond is] also the travel insurance capital of the world.”

Looking ahead, Wright is co-chairing a regional task force aiming to increase nonstop flights from Richmond to Europe by partnering with local governments and private companies. “I’m co-chairing a task force to sponsor more direct flights from Richmond to Europe,” he said. “It’s a partnership with the city, the counties, the tourism boards and a lot of private companies who call Richmond home.”

Allianz has further demonstrated its commitment by sponsoring one of Greater Richmond’s new venues—the Allianz Amphitheater—reflecting corporate involvement beyond traditional business operations. Wright pointed out additional advantages such as short commutes for employees: “Our regular commute here is about 25 minutes.” He concluded that risk-sensitive industries come to Greater Richmond seeking certainty but stay because they find growth opportunities.
