The George Mason University women’s tennis team recognized its seniors during the regular season finale against the University of Richmond on April 18. The Patriots lost the match 4-0 at the Mason Tennis Complex, but the event focused on celebrating senior players Maitree Diksha Rout and Avleen Waraich.
The recognition ceremony took place before play began, honoring Rout and Waraich for their dedication and contributions to the program. Both athletes were acknowledged for their leadership roles and academic achievements while representing George Mason women’s tennis.
Rout, from Odisha, India, is a mechanical engineering major who has been a steady member of the team’s lineup. She has earned Dean’s List honors and a spot on the Atlantic 10 Honor Roll. Rout’s career highlights include winning her flight at the 2023 Bedford Cup and clinching a key victory over St. Bonaventure in 2024. She played No. 1 singles in her final regular season appearance and plans to work as a project engineer with Baker Construction after graduation.
Waraich, from Sterling, Virginia, is majoring in health administration and policy. As team captain and frequent Dean’s List honoree, she was recognized for her leadership both on court and within team culture—earning her teammates’ nickname “Mom.” Her favorite memories are centered around camaraderie within the squad. After graduation, Waraich intends to pursue a healthcare career while working toward a master’s degree in health administration and policy.
During Friday’s match against Richmond, George Mason lost both doubles point and singles matches but continued to compete energetically—a reflection of standards set by their senior leaders.
Looking ahead, George Mason will participate in postseason play at the Atlantic 10 Tournament scheduled for April 22–25 in Orlando.
