George Mason University’s women’s tennis team lost to Rhode Island 4-1 on Apr. 23 at the USTA Campus in Orlando, Florida, during postseason play. The Patriots earned their only point of the match with a singles victory at the No. 4 position.

The outcome marks the end of George Mason’s run in the Atlantic 10 Championships and highlights Rhode Island’s strong performance in both doubles and singles matches.

Rhode Island secured the doubles point after winning matches at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Nikki Fernando and Kajsa Helgesen defeated Cenan Liu and Mary Young, 6-3, while Sophie Herrman and Ava Grnja overcame Noelle Talarek and Ravaka Noemie Ramanantoanina, 6-4. The remaining doubles match was unfinished but had Rhode Island leading.

In singles competition, Nikki Fernando won against Maitree Diksha Rout at No. 2 singles (6-3, 6-1), while Mary Young gave George Mason its only point by defeating Kajsa Helgesen (6-3, 6-3) at No. 4 singles. Anastasia Pettersson contributed another win for Rhode Island over Brooklyn Siegel (6-2, 7-5) at No. 6 singles before Sophie Herrman clinched victory for Rhode Island with a straight-set win over Maya Bayat (6-4, 6-2) at No. 3 singles.

Some matches were left unfinished as Rhode Island reached four points first; notably Cenan Liu trailed Grace Darcy in an unfinished match on court one.

The result concludes George Mason’s participation in this year’s conference tournament.
