George Mason softball lost both games of a doubleheader against Rhode Island on May 2 in Kingston, concluding the opening two games of their final regular season Atlantic 10 series. The Patriots were defeated by the Rams with scores of 6-3 and 8-3.

The outcome impacts George Mason’s standing in the Atlantic 10 Conference as they prepare for their last game of the regular season. Both teams are looking to finish strong before postseason play.

In the first game, George Mason’s offense was led by three solo home runs. Madi Sobota hit a homer to right center in the third inning for the team’s first run, followed by Logan Pickford’s home run to left center that gave George Mason a brief lead. Sobota added another solo home run in the fifth inning, but Rhode Island responded with four runs—including two unearned—in their half of that frame and secured victory with an additional sacrifice fly in the sixth. Abbey Lane pitched five innings for George Mason, allowing six hits and five runs (two earned), while Alyssa Rangel finished out the game.

During game two, Elyssa DeRosa scored on a sacrifice fly from Lane and Tess Altevers Harris came home after Kamryn Inman walked with bases loaded to give George Mason an early lead. Altevers Harris also hit a solo homerun in the third inning. However, Hannah Hernandez tied it up for Rhode Island with a single that brought in two runs during the fourth inning. In a decisive sixth inning, Hernandez delivered a grand slam as part of five total runs scored by Rhode Island that sealed an 8-3 win over George Mason.

Pitcher Bri Lencz started for George Mason and went five innings; Rangel entered as relief but was unable to record an out before Harlowe Nigh closed out one scoreless inning.

The Patriots will play Rhode Island again on Sunday, May 3 at noon at URI Softball Complex for both teams’ final regular season matchup.
