George Mason University defeated James Madison University 7-4 in their final home midweek baseball game of the season on April 21 at Spuhler Field.

The matchup saw George Mason rally from a four-run deficit to secure the win. The result moves George Mason to an even record for the season, while James Madison continues its campaign in the Sun Belt Conference.

Freshman right fielder Jackson Morse led the Patriots with three hits, one run batted in, and a run scored. Junior first baseman Matthew Westley contributed two hits and scored twice. Junior third baseman Jake Butler had two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs. Graduate student Luciano Terilli added a key two-run single during a five-run fifth inning that put George Mason ahead for good.

James Madison took an early lead with runs in each of the second, third, and fourth innings. Senior first baseman Wyatt Campbell hit a two-run home run to give the Dukes a 4-0 advantage by the middle of the fourth inning. However, George Mason began its comeback with Butler’s RBI double in the bottom of that frame before taking control with five runs across four hits in the fifth inning.

On the mound, junior Tanner Kaler earned his first win as a Patriot after pitching three innings and allowing three runs on five hits. Graduate student Diego Cardenas recorded his first save for George Mason by closing out the ninth inning without allowing any runs.

Looking ahead, George Mason will travel for a three-game Atlantic 10 series against Fordham starting Friday at Bronx, New York.
