Garfield Elementary School received a donation of books for its library through a partnership with the Library of Congress and the Springfield Veterans of Foreign Wars, according to an April 15 announcement. The event brought together students, staff, and community members to celebrate the expanded resources now available to students.
The new books are expected to support classroom learning and encourage independent reading among students. By increasing access to diverse stories and knowledge, school officials say the donation will help foster curiosity and reflect student interests.
Virginia Congressman James Walkinshaw attended the celebration, speaking primarily to fifth and sixth graders about honoring veterans and supporting military families. He also answered questions from students about how Congress works. Captain Steve Williams from the Springfield VFW introduced Walkinshaw at the event, noting that April is recognized as Month of the Military Child.
Garfield Elementary holds a Purple Star School designation in recognition of its commitment to supporting military-connected students and their families. Organizers said this distinction made the book donation particularly meaningful for both Garfield’s community and its partners.
Representatives from both organizations said that their involvement reflects a broader commitment not only to veterans but also to providing educational opportunities for young people. With these new resources in place, Garfield Elementary hopes students will have more chances to explore new topics while building on values such as service and learning.
