Travelers in the Fredericksburg area, Northern Neck, and Middle Peninsula are being advised to exercise caution on Sunday morning due to a risk of freezing fog that could lead to icy road conditions. The National Weather Service has forecasted the possibility of freezing fog from midnight through 9 a.m. on December 7.
Bridges, overpasses, and ramps are particularly susceptible to icing during these conditions because their surfaces tend to freeze before those of regular roadways. “Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews will patrol roads overnight in affected areas to monitor for icing. Crews will apply salt and sand as needed to state-maintained roads to reduce icing and improve motorist traction,” according to VDOT.
Motorists are encouraged to check current road conditions before traveling by using the 511Virginia service at https://511.vdot.virginia.gov, downloading the 511Virginia mobile app, or calling 511. Travelers can also follow updates from VDOT Fredericksburg District on social media platforms such as X and Facebook.
VDOT recommends keeping an emergency supply kit in vehicles at all times and provides additional winter driving information on its website. The VDOT Customer Service Center is available around the clock for questions or reports about hazardous road conditions.
