The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced the early completion of a pedestrian and bicycle connector project in Fredericksburg. The $2.4 million initiative was finished months ahead of schedule by contractor M&F Concrete, Inc.
Construction on the project began on December 3, 2024. It involved extending a paved shared-use path along Lafayette Boulevard, stretching approximately 10 feet wide from Twin Lake Drive to St. Paul Street.
The new path includes ramps for users with disabilities and marked crosswalks at intersections with Twin Lake Drive, Springwood Drive, Kensington Place, and St. Paul Street. Pedestrian signal crossing equipment and pavement markings were also installed at the intersection of Lafayette Boulevard and Twin Lake Drive.
Additionally, a paved access point to the Virginia Central Railway Trail was constructed from the cul-de-sac of Springwood Drive. A bike repair station was installed at Alum Spring Park as part of the project.
Originally expected to be completed in November 2025, the work concluded four months early.
