Drivers in the Fredericksburg District should expect a range of roadwork and lane closures from September 7 to 13, 2025, as the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) continues maintenance and construction projects across several counties.
On Interstate 95 southbound, alternating lane closures will take place between Exit 140 (Courthound Road) and Exit 136 (Centreport Parkway) from Sunday through Thursday nights for milling and paving. Northbound I-95 will also see mobile paving operations between Exit 118 (Thornburg) and Exit 126 (Spotsylvania), with similar nighttime closures. Both directions of I-95 will experience bridge washing at various locations in Caroline, Spotsylvania, and Stafford counties during overnight hours.
Caroline County will have multiple work zones. Route 2 will operate one-way alternating traffic for pavement marking between Route 207 and the Spotsylvania line on weekdays. Repairs on Route 17 northbound near Mount Creek Bridge, Route 207 eastbound over Polecat Creek, and paving along segments of Route 301 are scheduled with varying nighttime or daytime closures. On Route 639 (Ladysmith Road), a turn lane is being installed under permit for a new residential development.
In the City of Fredericksburg, road widening on Route 1 southbound between Charles Street and Fall Hill Avenue will result in overnight lane closures. Fall Hill Avenue will also be affected by daytime right lane and shoulder closures for widening work.
Gloucester County’s Farmwood Road (Route 1237) and Lancaster County’s W. Church Street (Route 1013) will undergo pavement marking during weekday daylight hours.
Spotsylvania County has several ongoing projects: fiber installation under permit on parts of Route 1; gas main installation work on southbound lanes; water main installation along Tidewater Trail; continuous pavement reconstruction on Courthouse Road; traffic signal improvements; intermittent fiber installs; bridge repairs; road widening; installation of a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon on Spotsylvania Parkway; mobile pavement marking operations on both primary and secondary roads; as well as signal work at multiple intersections.
Stafford County’s Kings Highway (Route 3), Butler Road (Route 218), Hollywood Farm Road (Route 601), Barrett Heights Road (Route 624), Onville Road (Route 641), Greenspring Drive, Salisbury Drive, Stableside Lane, Staffordboro Boulevard, and various secondary roads will see alternating lane closures for utility installations or pavement marking throughout the week.
VDOT reports that construction is progressing on several major infrastructure projects:
– The northbound Route 207 bridge over Mattaponi River in Caroline County is being rehabilitated with completion expected by April 2026.
– Intersection improvements are underway at two locations along Fredericksburg’s Route 1—at Fall Hill Avenue and at Princess Anne Street/Hanson Avenue—with completion set for June 2026.
– In Essex County, Cheaneys Bridge Road over Dragon Run Creek remains closed until May 2026 due to bridge replacement.
– Gloucester County is seeing $5.1 million in safety upgrades at the intersection of Route 17 and Woods Cross Road/Davenport Road with project completion anticipated by December 2025.
– The westbound bridge rehabilitation project at the Mathews/Gloucester line on Route 3/14 continues until November 2025.
– King & Queen County’s Rock Spring Road is closed for bridge replacement until December 2025.
– In Lancaster County, Camps Prong Bridge maintenance restricts travel to one lane each way until November 2025 while Kamps Mill Road remains closed pending emergency repairs following culvert deterioration.
– A $3.5 million improvement to Mathews County’s North End Branch Bridge restricts vehicle width to ten feet through June 2026.
– Gardy’s Mill Road remains closed due to dam breach-related damage at the Northumberland/Westmoreland county line since May 2025. VDOT maintains this roadway while the dam falls under Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources’ oversight.
– Widening efforts continue near I-95 Exit 126 in Spotsylvania with completion expected by September 2027 including new lanes for merging traffic, dual left turn lanes onto I‑95 ramps, an auxiliary interstate lane, ramp expansions, and noise barriers.
– Mudd Tavern Road now features four open travel lanes between I‑95 and Route 1 while final construction activities continue past its original May 2025 target date.
– Harrison Road in Spotsylvania is being expanded to four lanes with sidewalk additions—projected finish is late summer 2026.
For those seeking alternatives to driving alone during this period of frequent roadwork delays or detours around long-term construction sites such as Cheaneys Bridge or Gardy’s Mill Roads, GWRideConnect offers free ridesharing information as part of regional transportation solutions through the George Washington Regional Commission.
“Travelers should use Route 202 (Hampton Hall Road) as a detour,” VDOT advised regarding Gardy’s Mill closure caused by dam failure earlier this year that damaged both dam infrastructure overseen by DWR and VDOT-maintained roadway above it.
