The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced a series of scheduled roadwork and construction activities in the Fredericksburg District for the week of August 10 to 16, 2025. The planned work includes lane closures, paving, bridge rehabilitation, and intersection improvements across multiple counties.

On Interstate 95 northbound, alternating lane closures will occur between Exit 118 (Thornburg) and Exit 126 (Spotsylvania), as well as between Exit 143 (Aquia/Garrisonville) and Exit 148 (Quantico), from Sunday through Thursday during overnight hours. Southbound I-95 will also see overnight lane closures near Exit 140 (Courthouse Road) to Exit 136 (Centreport Parkway).

Caroline County will have one-way traffic on Route 2 due to milling and paving operations, along with nighttime bridge work on Route 207 eastbound at Polecat Creek. In addition, Route 301 is set for alternating lane closures for both milling and paving.

In the City of Fredericksburg, Route 1 southbound will have right lane closures for an intersection improvement project between Wellford Street and Fall Hill Avenue during overnight hours. Fall Hill Avenue will experience daytime right turn lane closure at its intersection with Route 1.

A new traffic pattern is scheduled to begin Wednesday morning on the rehabilitated bridge deck over Burke Mill Stream along Route 3/14 at the Gloucester County and Mathews County line. Drivers are advised to stay alert for new signage and pavement markings guiding them through this area.

Additional projects include mobile pavement marking on Farmwood Road in Gloucester County, surface treatment on several routes in Middlesex County, and alternating one-way lane closures in Northumberland County for paving activities.

Major ongoing construction projects continue throughout the region. These include bridge replacement on South River Road in Caroline County, expected completion by September 2025; intersection improvements on Route 1 at Fall Hill Avenue and Princess Anne Street/Hanson Avenue in Fredericksburg set to finish by June 2026; and safety modifications at the intersection of Route 17 and Woods Cross Road in Gloucester County with anticipated completion by December 2025.

Bridge maintenance is underway over Camps Prong in Lancaster County where single-lane travel remains until November next year. Emergency repairs are also being planned for Kamps Mill Road following culvert deterioration identified during a routine inspection.

Route widening efforts continue near I-95 exit 126 in Spotsylvania County as part of a larger plan to enhance capacity with additional lanes and improved ramps; project completion is projected for September 2027. Harrison Road reconstruction in Spotsylvania aims to add travel lanes, turn lanes, sidewalks, crosswalks, and pedestrian signals by late summer of the following year.

Gardy’s Mill Road remains closed at Gardy’s Millpond due to dam damage sustained earlier this year; VDOT maintains the road while the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources oversees dam repairs. Motorists should use Hampton Hall Road as an alternate route.

Commuters seeking alternatives can access GWRideConnect services provided by the George Washington Regional Commission for ridesharing information throughout the Fredericksburg area.

“Drivers should stay alert for signs, construction barrels, and new pavement markings guiding them through the new traffic pattern.”

VDOT advises motorists to allow extra travel time when passing through active work zones or consider alternate routes when possible.
