The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced a series of lane closures and construction activities across the Fredericksburg District for the week of March 8-14, 2026. These activities are part of ongoing efforts to maintain and improve transportation infrastructure in the region.
On Interstate 95, mobile double lane closures will take place northbound and southbound between exits 118 (Thornburg) and 126 (Spotsylvania) from Tuesday to Thursday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., for soil sampling work. Additionally, the northbound off-ramp at exit 126B to Route 1 southbound will close nightly from Monday through early Friday, between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m., as part of construction for exit improvements. Drivers are advised to use alternate interchanges during these times.
In Caroline County, single lane closures on Route 1 are scheduled for utility work under permit, while alternating lane closures with flagging will occur on Route 17 for milling and paving. Multiple routes in the county will also see one-way traffic for mobile sign work.
Fredericksburg city projects include overnight overhead sign removal on Route 1 near Falmouth Bridge, right turn lane closure at Fall Hill Avenue, and intersection improvement projects affecting several roads such as Princess Anne Street and Fall Hill Avenue.
Gloucester County’s Route 17 (Main Street) will have alternating lane closures Sunday through Thursday nights for bridge work. In King George County, guardrail installation is planned on Route 3 westbound near Rokeby Lane.
King William County motorists should expect single lane closures on Route 360 westbound for bridge maintenance and guardrail installation near Mill Road. Thompson Avenue will be closed around-the-clock at its intersection with Route 30 for concrete repairs; detours are in place.
Other counties including Mathews, Richmond, Spotsylvania, Stafford, and Westmoreland have scheduled various roadwork activities ranging from guardrail installations to signal inspections and fiber installation under permit.
Several long-term projects continue throughout the district:
– The northbound Route 207 bridge over Mattaponi River in Caroline County remains closed until June 2026 as crews replace key structural elements.
– Intersection improvements on Route 1 at Fall Hill Avenue and Princess Anne Street/Hanson Avenue in Fredericksburg are expected to finish by June 2026.
– Cheaneys Bridge Road over Dragon Run Creek in Essex County is closed until May 2026 for bridge replacement.
– Kamps Mill Road in Lancaster County is closed due to culvert deterioration; an emergency repair schedule is pending.
– A $3.5 million rehabilitation project continues on the Route 14 bridge over North End Branch in Mathews County with completion set for June 2026.
– Gardy’s Mill Road at Gardy’s Millpond remains closed indefinitely following dam damage last year; detours use Hampton Hall Road.
– Havelock Road in Richmond County is shut down through spring 2026 as crews install a new culvert.
– Widening of Route 1 near I-95 exit 126 in Spotsylvania aims to add lanes and noise barriers by September 2027.
– Harrison Road reconstruction between Gordon Road and Old Plank Road in Spotsylvania includes widening and sidewalk additions with late summer completion targeted.
– In Stafford County, construction begins this month on replacing the four-lane Route 1 bridge over Chopawamsic Creek; most lanes remain open during off-peak hours with completion anticipated by June 2028.
– Additional intersection upgrades along Route 1 at Telegraph Road/Woodstock Lane and Courthouse Road are underway with completion dates extending into fall of next year or later.
