Fredericksburg District announces weekly roadwork schedule including major construction updates

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has released its weekly traffic alert for the Fredericksburg District, covering scheduled roadwork and ongoing construction projects from October 26 to November 1, 2025.

On Interstate 95, both northbound and southbound lanes will experience overnight bridge washing at exits 110 (Ladysmith), 118 (Thornburg), 130 (Route 3), and 133 (Falmouth/Warrenton). These operations will take place between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., with alternating lane closures at bridges over the Matta and Rappahannock rivers.

In Caroline County, Route 1 will have single lane closures for utility work, while Routes 2 and 17 will see alternating lane closures for pavement marking and rumblestrip installation. Bridge washing is also scheduled on several structures, including Route 207 over the Mattaponi River and Route 301 over Fork Peumonsend Creek.

The City of Fredericksburg will have right lane and shoulder closures on Route 1 between Charles Street and Fall Hill Avenue for road widening. Fall Hill Avenue will also see similar closures for related work. On the Falmouth Bridge, pothole patching and concrete repairs are planned during overnight hours.

In Essex County, multiple locations on Routes 17 and 637 will undergo bridge washing. King and Queen County will see similar maintenance on bridges over the Mattaponi River as well as pavement marking activities on secondary roads.

Bridge repairs are set for the Lord Delaware Bridge in King and Queen County/Town of West Point during nighttime hours. In King William County, alternating lane closures are planned on Eltham Bridge over the Pamunkey River for repairs.

Lancaster County’s Route 3 eastbound near Rappahannock Landing will have guardrail work requiring single lane closures. Pavement marking refreshes are scheduled throughout county secondary roads.

Mathews County’s Gwynn’s Island Bridge is slated for overnight bridge washing. In Spotsylvania County, fiber installation under permit continues along various segments of Route 1, with additional gas main installation southbound between Guinea Station Road and Mudd Tavern Road/Morris Road. Final paving activities are planned on Route 208 between Lawyers Road and Lake Anna Bridge.

Stafford County projects include fiber installation along Route 3 (Kings Highway) eastbound between Cool Springs Road and Leonard Road as well as median improvements along different segments of Route 17. Milling and paving are scheduled for Centreport Parkway.

Several new pedestrian safety devices known as rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFBs) are being installed in Spotsylvania Parkway, Stafford’s Primmer House Road, Plantation Drive, Woodcutters Road, among other locations.

Westmoreland County’s portion of Route 3 (Kings Highway) will have mobile lane closures to refresh pavement markings between Flat Iron Road and Finches Hill Road.

Ongoing major construction projects continue throughout the district:

– The northbound bridge rehabilitation project on Route 207 in Caroline County is diverting traffic to the southbound bridge until April 2026.
– Intersection improvement projects in Fredericksburg at Fall Hill Avenue/Princess Anne Street/Hanson Avenue are expected to finish by June 2026.
– Cheaneys Bridge Road in Essex County remains closed for a replacement project until May 2026.
– Gloucester County’s $5.1 million intersection safety upgrade at Route 17 /Woods Cross Road/Davenport Road is underway with completion set for December 2025.
– Rock Spring Road in King and Queen County is closed through December 2025 for a bridge replacement.
– Kamps Mill Road in Lancaster County remains closed due to culvert deterioration; detours via Route 3 are recommended until further notice.
– A $3.5 million rehabilitation project continues on Mathews County’s Route 14 North End Branch Bridge with one-way traffic directed by signals through June 2026.
– Gardy’s Mill Road at Northumberland/Westmoreland line remains closed after a dam breach; travelers should use Hampton Hall Road as an alternate route.
– Havelock Road in Richmond County closes starting September 17 for six months due to culvert replacement.
– Spotsylvania’s I-95 Exit 126 area improvements—including widening lanes—are projected to finish by September 2027.
– Harrison Road reconstruction in Spotsylvania aims to add lanes, sidewalks, crosswalks, with completion expected by late summer 2026.
– Stafford’s intersection realignment at Telegraph Road/Woodstock Lane is ongoing through fall 2026, while improvements at Courthouse/Bells Hill/Hope Roads should wrap up by summer 2027.
