The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced a series of lane closures and ongoing construction projects in the Fredericksburg District for the week of January 4-10, 2026. The planned work covers several counties, including Caroline, Essex, King George, King William, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Westmoreland, Lancaster, Mathews, Northumberland, Richmond County, and the City of Fredericksburg.

In Caroline County, Route 1 will see single lane closures during daytime hours for utility work and overnight bridge maintenance between Ladysmith Road and Rogers Clark Boulevard. Vip Jon Road will have alternating single lane closures with flagging at Ladysmith Road for guardrail installation.

For the City of Fredericksburg and Stafford County area, Falmouth Bridge will experience alternating northbound and southbound single lane closures overnight for bridge maintenance. Southbound Route 1 near Hanson Avenue will be reduced to one lane at various times due to curb and sidewalk ramp construction as part of an intersection improvement project.

Essex County’s Route 17 (Tidewater Trail) northbound and southbound lanes will have single lane closures for guardrail repairs near Colnbrook Road and Wares Wharf Road. In King George County on Route 301 southbound near Dawsons Landing Drive, guardrail work will require a single lane closure.

King William County drivers should expect one-way alternating traffic on westbound Route 33 near Chelsea Road due to guardrail work. Overnight bridge maintenance is scheduled on both directions of Route 360 between Hanover County line and Route 30 intersection. Daytime eastbound closures are also planned for guardrail work near Route 30.

Spotsylvania County will see fiber installation under permit leading to intermittent lane and shoulder closures along several routes including Route 1 southbound between Massaponax Church Road and Ladysmith Road; water line installation on Route 2; signal equipment work at intersections along Spotsylvania Parkway; road widening on Harrison Road; traffic signal improvements on Courthouse Road; guardrail installations; as well as ongoing auxiliary projects such as I-95 Exit 126 area improvements that include additional turn lanes and noise barriers with completion set for September 2027.

In Stafford County, multiple projects involve alternating or single lane closures for median improvements on Route 17 between Poplar Road and Hartwood Church Road; drainage pipe replacement on Marlborough Point Road; new left turn lanes being built at Telegraph Road/Woodstock Lane intersections with completion expected in fall 2026; as well as continued widening efforts at the intersection of Route 1/Courthouse Road/Bells Hill/Hope Roads scheduled through summer 2027.

Westmoreland County’s Ridge Road (Route 205) near Longfield Road remains subject to alternating one-way traffic directed by flaggers due to ongoing guardrail work.

Additional district-wide updates include long-term bridge rehabilitation projects such as the northbound Route 207 bridge over Mattaponi River in Caroline County—traffic is currently diverted with completion anticipated by April 2026—and similar efforts across Cheaneys Bridge in Essex (reopening May 2026), Kamps Millpond in Lancaster (timeline pending emergency repair schedule), North End Branch Bridge in Mathews ($3.5 million project finishing June 2026), Gardy’s Millpond at the Northumberland/Westmoreland line (closure since May 2025 after dam breach), Havelock Road over Scates Mill Stream in Richmond County (culvert replacement reopening spring 2026).
