The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has released its weekly traffic alert for the Fredericksburg District, covering scheduled roadwork and construction activities from August 31 to September 6, 2025. Motorists in Caroline, Gloucester, Mathews, Richmond, Spotsylvania, and Stafford counties should expect various lane closures and detours as crews perform maintenance, paving, bridge rehabilitation, signal work, and other infrastructure improvements.
On Interstate 95 southbound between Exit 140 (Courthouse Road) and Exit 136 (Centreport Parkway), alternating lane closures are planned during overnight hours for milling and paving. In Caroline County, Route 2 will have one-way alternating traffic for pavement marking, while Route 207 will see single-lane closures near the Mattaponi River bridges as part of an ongoing northbound bridge rehabilitation project expected to finish by April 2026.
Route 301 in Caroline County will experience alternating lane closures for milling and paving at several segments. Additionally, Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) will have a single lane closed during daytime hours to install a turn lane supporting new residential development.
Gloucester County’s Route 17 southbound is scheduled for guardrail installation with single-lane closures on select days. Secondary roads in both Gloucester and Mathews counties will undergo resurfacing with surface treatment applied under one-way alternating traffic conditions.
In Richmond County and the Town of Tappahannock, Downing Bridge (Route 360 over the Rappahannock River) will be reduced to a single lane overnight for maintenance. Several projects continue throughout Richmond County including milling and paving on Route 3 and guardrail repairs on Route 621 near Route 690.
Spotsylvania County drivers should prepare for multiple ongoing projects affecting Routes 1, 2/17 (Tidewater Trail), Route 208 (Courthouse Road), Old Plank Road (Route 610), Southpoint Parkway (Route 711), Spotsylvania Parkway, as well as various secondary roads. Work includes fiber installation under permit, gas main installation work under permit on southbound Route 1 between Guinea Station Road and Mudd Tavern Road/Morris Road during overnight hours, water main installation work under permit on Tidewater Trail at night through Thursday morning hours, signal upgrades at intersections along major routes such as Route 3 and Courthouse Road intersections, roundabout construction under permit on Old Plank Road between Lewis Thornburg Road and Pullen Drive during weekday daylight hours, installation of a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon on Spotsylvania Parkway between Deep Creek Drive/Holley Oak Lane and New Berne Road/Yellow Birch Drive midweek afternoons through Friday afternoon hours; bridge washing is also scheduled across numerous structures throughout the county.
Stafford County motorists can expect nighttime eastbound/westbound lane closures along Kings Highway for fiber installation under permit; daytime median improvements are planned along sections of Route 17; additional waterline/sewer line installations are underway on southbound lanes between Village Parkway and Hartwood Church Road; further fiber installation continues toward Fauquier County. Butler Road (Route 218) is set for fiber installation overnight through Thursday morning. Pavement marking operations will affect both primary routes numbered below or equal to #599—such as Route 1—and secondary routes above #600 across Stafford County.
Several long-term construction projects continue across the district:
