Road work and improvement projects are scheduled across several counties in the Fredericksburg District from December 21 to December 27, 2025. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), which manages one of the largest state highway systems in the United States, will oversee these operations as part of its responsibility to maintain and operate Virginia’s roads, bridges, and tunnels for public safety and efficiency. More information about VDOT’s mission and history can be found on its official website.

In Caroline County, a single lane closure is planned on Route 1 between Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) and Route 207 (Rogers Clark Boulevard) for utility work under permit on Monday and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Middlesex County will see Route 33 (General Puller Highway) closed between Gloucester Road and Forrest Street in Saluda for tree removal on Monday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a detour posted. If weather delays occur, the work will move to Tuesday.

In Spotsylvania County, several projects are scheduled:
– Route 1: Single lane closures between Massaponax Church Road and Ladysmith Road for fiber installation.
– Route 3: Intermittent single lane closures between Route 610 (Corter Avenue) and Route 20 (Constitution Highway).
– Route 620 (Harrison Road): One-way alternating traffic for road widening.
– Route 636 (Mine Road): Lane closures for fiber installation.
– Route 1188 (Stoney Creek Drive): Alternating traffic due to pavement marking after resurfacing.

Stafford County’s Route 17 will have alternating northbound and southbound lane closures between Poplar Road and Hartwood Church Road due to median improvements.

Several ongoing projects continue in the region:
– Caroline County’s northbound bridge rehabilitation on Route 207 over Mattaponi River continues with completion expected by April 2026.
– In Fredericksburg City, intersection improvements at Fall Hill Avenue/Princess Anne Street/Hanson Avenue along Route 1 are set for completion by June 2026.
– Essex County’s Cheaneys Bridge Road over Dragon Run Creek remains closed until May 2026 for bridge replacement.
– Gloucester County has completed $5.1 million in safety improvements at the intersection of Routes 17 and Woods Cross/Davenport Roads.
– Lancaster County closed Kamps Mill Road over Camps Millpond after culvert deterioration; reopening details will be announced once repairs are scheduled.
– Mathews County is rehabilitating the North End Branch Bridge on Route 14 through June 2026 with width restrictions in place.
– Gardy’s Mill Road at Gardy’s Millpond remains closed due to dam breach damage since May; travelers should use Hampton Hall Road as an alternate route.
– Richmond County’s Havelock Road is shut down until spring next year while crews replace a culvert over Scates Mill Stream.

Spotsylvania’s I-95 Exit area is being improved with road widening near Exit126, additional turn lanes, noise barriers, and auxiliary lanes through September2027. Harrison Road reconstruction continues through late summer next year with expanded travel lanes, sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, signals, and crosswalks.
