Multiple roadwork and infrastructure projects are scheduled throughout the Fredericksburg District from August 24 to August 30, 2025, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). The planned work will affect major highways, secondary roads, and bridges across several counties and cities in the region.

On Interstate 95 northbound, single lane closures for milling and paving are set between exits 118 (Thornburg) and 130 (Route 3) during overnight hours. Pavement marker installation and rumble strip work will occur between exits 140 (Courthouse Road) and 148 (Quantico), also requiring alternating lane closures at night.

Southbound I-95 will see similar nighttime lane closures between exits 140 (Courthouse Road) and 136 (Centreport Parkway) for milling and paving operations.

In Caroline County, Route 1 southbound will have daytime lane and shoulder closures for fiber installation. Milling, paving, bridge washing, guardrail repairs, turn lane construction, and pavement marking activities are scheduled on various primary and secondary routes across Caroline County.

Fredericksburg city streets such as Route 1 southbound, Route 2 (Dixon Street), Fall Hill Avenue, Eagle Drive, Lee Hill School Drive, Old Dominion Parkway, among others will experience lane or turn lane closures for construction or improvement projects during off-peak hours. Intersection improvements are underway at key locations on Route 1 with anticipated completion by June 2026.

Essex County drivers can expect single-lane closures on Route 360 eastbound west of Piscataway Creek for guardrail repairs. Bridge maintenance on Downing Bridge (Route 360 over the Rappahannock River) will reduce traffic to one lane overnight through Richmond County into Tappahannock.

Mathews County is undergoing secondary road resurfacing with alternating traffic patterns on multiple local routes. In addition to this work, a $3.5 million bridge rehabilitation project is ongoing to improve the Route 14 bridge over North End Branch with an expected finish in June 2026.

Bridge washing activities are planned in several counties—including Spotsylvania—on a variety of state-maintained bridges as part of routine efforts to remove debris and prevent deterioration.

Several larger-scale infrastructure projects continue across the district:

– Construction continues on the northbound Route 207 bridge over the Mattaponi River in Caroline County; completion is expected by April 2026.
– Cheaneys Bridge Road in Essex County remains closed until May 2026 while a new bridge is built.
– A $5.1 million intersection safety upgrade is ongoing at Route 17/Woods Cross Road in Gloucester County; completion is set for December 2025.
– The rehabilitation of the westbound Route 3/14 bridge over Burke Mill Stream at the Mathews/Gloucester line proceeds toward a November 2025 finish.
– In King and Queen County, Rock Spring Road stays closed for bridge replacement until December next year.
– Lancaster’s Camps Prong Bridge has restricted lanes for scour repairs through November; Kamps Mill Road is closed due to culvert deterioration.
– Gardy’s Mill Road at the Northumberland/Westmoreland county line remains closed after dam damage earlier this year; VDOT maintains this section of roadway while detours remain posted.
– In Spotsylvania County near I-95 exit 126, widening projects continue on both Route 1 and Harrison Road with projected completions stretching into late summer of either next year or beyond. Noise barriers are also being installed along portions of I-95 southbound as part of these works.
– Four lanes are now open along Mudd Tavern Road near I-95/Route 1 but final construction continues past original deadlines.
