The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced scheduled lane closures and construction activities for the Fredericksburg District from March 1 to March 7, 2026. These activities will affect several counties and cities in the region, including work on major routes such as Interstate 95, Route 1, Route 3, and others.
On Interstate 95 northbound, mobile double lane closures for pothole patching are planned between Exit 104 (Carmel Church) and Exit 148 (Quantico) on Wednesday from midnight to 4 a.m. Soil sampling work for a future construction project will also occur between mile markers 116-117 at the Matta River bridge with alternating lane closures on Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Southbound I-95 will see similar pothole patching operations during the same overnight hours on Wednesday. Soil sampling is also scheduled between mile markers 117-116 at the Matta River bridge during daytime hours.
In Caroline County, single lane closures are set for Route 1 due to utility work under permit. Guardrail installation will take place on Route 207 near the Route 301 overpass and on Route 647 at the Mattaponi River bridge. Mobile sign work is planned across multiple segments of Route 640 and Route 652.
Essex County’s Route 17 southbound will have guardrail installation near Marl Bank Road throughout the week. In the City of Fredericksburg, intersection improvement projects will cause lane closures on Fall Hill Avenue, Princess Anne Street, and parts of Route 1 northbound.
Gloucester County’s portion of Route 17 southbound will experience single lane closure for guardrail installation near Adner Road. King George County will see similar guardrail installations affecting both Route 3 westbound near Rokeby Lane and Route 301 northbound near Davis Drive.
King William County has scheduled bridge maintenance with single lane closures on westbound Route 360 between Hanover County line and the intersection with Route 30. Additional guardrail work is planned near Mill Road.
Mathews County’s Buckley Hall Road (Route 198) will have one-way alternating traffic due to guardrail installation near Ridge Road. Richmond County’s Richmond Hill Road (Route 620) faces a single lane closure for similar reasons.
In Spotsylvania County, fiber installation under permit requires single lane and shoulder closures along sections of Route 1 and intermittent full traffic stops are expected overnight Wednesday through Thursday morning for safety measures related to signal mast arm installations at I-95 exit area improvements. Other roadways such as Plank Road (Route 3), Courthouse Road (Route 208), Harrison Road (Route 620), Spotswood Furnace Road (Route 620), Mine Road (Route 636), Leavells Road (Route639), Stansbury Drive (Route1196), and within Loriella Park subdivision will be affected by various ongoing projects including road widening, pavement patching, realignment work, or fiber installation.
Stafford County drivers should expect night-time guardrail installations along multiple points of Route1 as well as periodic single-lane closures associated with construction for bridge replacement over Chopawamsic Creek and signal work at several intersections including Telegraph Road, Centreport Parkway, Garrisonville Road, Primmer House Road, Plantation Drive, Woodcutters Road among others. Improvements are also underway along portions of Routes3 and17 in Stafford County with median enhancements or signal upgrades scheduled.
Westmoreland County’s roadwork includes guardrail installations impacting both Route3 near Route202 and Ferry Landing Road (Route638).
