Extremely cold temperatures are impacting travel conditions in the Fredericksburg area, Northern Neck, and Middle Peninsula following snowfall yesterday. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has stated that its crews remain on duty to treat and plow roads as necessary, particularly in areas with heavier snow accumulation. VDOT noted that salt becomes less effective at reducing ice when temperatures drop below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, so sand is also being applied to improve traction for motorists.
Drivers are advised to be cautious, especially on roads with light traffic, hills, curves, bridges, ramps, and overpasses. VDOT urges travelers to reduce speed and slow down before crossing bridges or entering ramps.
Road conditions across the 14-county Fredericksburg District vary due to the storm’s path. Conditions may be more severe in areas south and west of the district. Travelers are encouraged to check current road status through 511Virginia before beginning their trips. On 511Virginia, road conditions are categorized as clear, minor (bare pavement except for isolated spots of snow or ice), moderate (snow or ice on major portions of the road), or severe (drifting or partially blocked road). More information can be found at https://511.vdot.virginia.gov.
In specific regions:
– Interstate 95 is reported clear in Caroline, Spotsylvania, and Stafford counties. While main roads in Spotsylvania and Stafford are clear, VDOT crews continue monitoring for slick spots.
– In Caroline County, primary and secondary roads have minor conditions with isolated patches of snow and ice.
– On the Middle Peninsula—including Essex, Gloucester, King and Queen, King William, Mathews, and Middlesex counties—primary roads have minor conditions while most secondary roads are rated moderate except in Essex County where snowfall was lighter. Nonessential travel is discouraged this morning.
– Across the Northern Neck region most roads are clear except Lancaster County where heavier snow fell Monday; here primary roads are clear but secondary routes near White Stone still have minor issues.
VDOT recommends keeping an emergency supply kit in vehicles at all times during winter weather events.
