Four members of the Virginia wrestling team were named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Academic Wrestling Team, according to an announcement by the league office on April 22.
The recognition highlights student-athletes who have demonstrated both academic achievement and athletic participation. The honorees from Virginia are Griffin Gammell, Nick Hamilton, Brenan Morgan, and Michael Murphy. Hamilton received this honor for the third consecutive season, while Gammell was recognized for a second straight year. Morgan and Murphy were selected for the first time.
A total of 26 student-athletes earned spots on this year’s list. To qualify for selection, wrestlers must have achieved at least a 3.0-grade point average over their previous two semesters or three terms and maintained a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 during their academic careers. Additionally, eligible students must be enrolled as undergraduates at their institution for at least one year and participate in no less than half of their team’s athletic contests.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to recognize top junior or senior undergraduate student-athletes in each sport annually. Candidates are required to maintain a minimum career GPA of 3.0 as well as a GPA of at least 3.0 during each of the last two semesters or three quarters while being enrolled as undergraduates for at least one year.
This recognition reflects ongoing efforts within collegiate athletics to support excellence both in competition and in academics.
