Steve Cortes, founder of the League of American Workers, has said that Virginia voters are strongly opposed to the car tax and are seeking tougher immigration enforcement. This statement was made on the social media platform X.

“Voters hate the Car Tax, and they demand Law & Order, especially on Immigration,” said Cortes.

Virginia’s ongoing debate over its annual personal property tax on vehicles, commonly referred to as the “car tax,” has intensified as candidates propose reforms in response to voter frustration. Immigration policy remains a significant issue, with discussions surrounding cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and rules regarding noncitizen voters influencing statewide discourse. According to the Virginia Mercury, these two concerns are at the forefront of recent political debates, highlighting how economic and social issues intersect in the state.

A recent internal poll conducted by the Virginia GOP found that 58% of registered voters support eliminating the car tax, while 22% favor reducing it. Only 12% expressed opposition. Independent voters showed strong support for elimination at 76%, indicating bipartisan interest in this issue. These statistics are influencing campaign strategies, as reported by Virginia GOP communications.

In 2023, immigrants in Virginia contributed $18.3 billion in federal, state, and local taxes despite ongoing debates about stricter enforcement policies. Over the past five years, surveys have shown increasing support among Republican voters for tighter immigration controls, reflecting a growing divide between economic benefits and enforcement politics. Axios reports that this trend underscores tensions within these areas.

Cortes is a former Trump campaign spokesman and veteran media commentator who currently leads the League of American Workers and appears on major networks. He previously managed Hispanic outreach for Trump’s 2016 and 2020 campaigns and later advised Ron DeSantis’s Political Action Committee (PAC). His background in finance and education from Georgetown University informs his political messaging, according to Key Speakers Bureau.

The League of American Workers was founded in 2022 by Cortes to promote pro-labor, populist economic policies through advocacy and media campaigns. The organization focuses on restoring wages and countering elite influence, positioning itself as a voice for blue-collar Americans. This mission is described on its official website.
