FOIA Request to James Madison University regarding Public University FY 2024 Employee Salaries on December 5, 2025.

Old Dominion News has submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to James Madison University seeking detailed records of employee compensation for the Fiscal Year 2024. The request was sent on December 5, 2025, and is aimed at obtaining comprehensive data on university employees’ salaries and related information.

The request specifically asks for records showing compensation details for all individuals employed by the university during Fiscal Year 2024. This includes various data fields such as fiscal year, employee name, gender, age or year of birth (if not exempt), date of birth (if not exempt or limited to month/year), employer name, title or position, department, hire date, compensation amount (base pay and any additional pay), compensation type (e.g., salary, hourly, stipend, bonus), and employment type (full-time or part-time).

The FOIA request emphasizes that if any portion of a responsive record is determined to be exempt from disclosure under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act (§2.2-3704 et seq.), all reasonably segregable non-exempt portions should be released in redacted form rather than withheld entirely. Old Dominion News has also requested a fee waiver for this information due to its role as a media organization involved in gathering and reporting news to the public.

This effort is part of Old Dominion News’s commitment to transparency and accountability in public institutions. As a member of The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy—a non-profit organization dedicated to investigating governmental agencies—Old Dominion News seeks to leverage FOIA laws to provide insight into government actions.

We look forward to receiving this information in an electronic format as it will greatly aid in our reporting efforts. As always, we remain open for any questions or clarifications regarding this request.
