Drivers in Patrick County can expect flagging operations and alternating traffic on Route 8 and Route 836 (Ashby Drive) starting March 30, according to an announcement from the Virginia Department of Transportation.
The planned roadwork will involve intermittent one-lane closures as crews replace drainage structures and install a left turn lane from northbound Route 8 onto westbound Route 836. Flagging will be limited to the hours of 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. while school is in session. The department said drivers may experience delays or consider alternate routes during this period.
Electronic message boards and signs will be posted along the affected roads to alert motorists about changes in traffic patterns throughout the project, which is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026.
According to the official website, the Virginia Department of Transportation manages one of the nation’s largest state highway systems, overseeing tens of thousands of lane-miles across Virginia. The agency’s responsibilities include building, maintaining, and operating roads, bridges, and tunnels to support safe and efficient transportation statewide.
Virginia Department of Transportation also provides services such as highway maintenance, traffic management through systems like Virginia 511, and oversight of land-use permits along state routes according to its official website. The department traces its origins back to the State Highway Commission established in 1906 before evolving into its current form as reported by VDOT.
The headquarters for Virginia Department of Transportation is located at 1221 East Broad Street in Richmond according to its official website.
