Virginia Tech’s baseball team combined efforts on Apr. 14 to throw its sixth no-hitter in program history, defeating Radford 14-0 at English Field during a seven-inning game shortened by the run rule.
The achievement marks the first time since May 13, 2000, that Virginia Tech has held an opponent hitless and only the second combined no-hitter in school history. The performance involved five pitchers—Madden Clement, Ethan Grim, Brody Roe, Josh Berzonski and Danny Lazaro—who together faced just one base runner over seven innings.
Clement began the night by retiring the first six batters he faced in his second outing of the season after returning from injury. Grim continued with three consecutive strikeouts before allowing a walk to Junho Son in the fourth inning—the only Highlander to reach base. However, Son was quickly erased by a double play initiated by catcher Henry Cooke.
Roe, Berzonski and Lazaro each pitched one hitless inning to complete the no-hitter. Notably, shortstop Ethan Gibson made a key defensive play in the seventh inning to preserve the feat before Lazaro finished with two strikeouts.
Offensively, Sam Grube led Virginia Tech with three hits including two doubles and two RBIs. Hudson Lutterman drove in four runs with a double while Nick Locurto contributed both a double and a home run as part of his two-hit night. The Hokies scored four runs in the second inning and added seven more during an eleven-batter fifth inning.
Virginia Tech will next host Pitt for a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series beginning Friday.
