A section of Filter Plant Road in Scott County will be closed during the day next week due to railroad repairs, according to a Mar. 13 announcement from the Virginia Department of Transportation. The closure will take place at the railroad trestle that crosses Filter Plant Road and is expected to begin Monday, March 16, lasting two to three days.

The closure is necessary for Norfolk Southern Railway to carry out maintenance work on the trestle. During this period, motorists are advised to use Broadwater Avenue as a detour while work is underway.

The temporary closure highlights ongoing efforts by transportation agencies and rail companies to maintain infrastructure safety and reliability. According to the official website, the Virginia Department of Transportation focuses on building, maintaining, and operating roads, bridges, and tunnels across the state to support a safe and efficient transportation system.

Virginia’s highway network is among the largest in the country, with tens of thousands of lane-miles managed by the department according to its official website. The agency also provides services such as highway maintenance, traffic management through systems like Virginia 511, and oversight of land-use permits along state routes according to its official website.

The Virginia Department of Transportation serves as a state agency overseeing planning, construction, and maintenance for roadways, bridges, and tunnels according to its official website. Its history dates back to the formation of the State Highway Commission in 1906 and has evolved over time as Virginia’s transportation needs have grown according to its official website.
