Old Dominion University’s baseball team won its third straight game and clinched a Sun Belt Conference series victory over Georgia Southern on April 18, with a walk-off hit from freshman Nick Felton. The Monarchs (19-19, 7-10 Sun Belt) prevailed in extra innings, defeating the Eagles (12-26, 5-12) after a dramatic finish.

The outcome is significant for Old Dominion as it marks their third consecutive win and a hard-fought series triumph within conference play. The game featured several lead changes and notable individual performances.

Felton delivered the decisive moment in the bottom of the tenth inning. With no outs and runners in scoring position, he sent a pitch to left field, allowing Scotty Young to score the winning run. Felton was quickly surrounded by teammates after his game-winning hit.

Earlier in extra innings, ODU reliever Bailey Matela worked out of trouble despite allowing two walks. In Old Dominion’s half of the tenth, Young singled before advancing to third on an error; Jack Slater then stole second base before Felton ended the contest with his hit.

Tyler Zedalis contributed significantly at bat for ODU, finishing four-for-five with two solo home runs—his first career multi-home run performance—and three runs scored. Efrain Morales went three-for-five with one run scored while Will Johnson had two hits and drew one walk. Matela earned his second win of the season by pitching 1.1 innings in relief.

Georgia Southern tied the game in the seventh inning when James McCoy hit a three-run homer and later took their first lead following an error by ODU’s defense. The Eagles added insurance runs but Old Dominion responded with three runs in their half of the eighth inning to even things up again before heading into extras.

The teams are scheduled to conclude their series Sunday morning at 11 a.m.
