Fairfax County Public Schools announced on May 4 that National Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week will be observed from May 4 through May 8. The week is dedicated to recognizing the contributions of educators and staff who support, challenge, and inspire students.
The announcement highlights the importance of acknowledging those who help students succeed both academically and personally. Fairfax County Public Schools said the week serves as a time to thank all teachers and staff for their dedication.
The district recognized three teachers for their outstanding work at last year’s FCPS Honors event. Andrea Edmonson, a third grade teacher at Little Run Elementary School, was noted for her transition from long-term substitute to full-time teacher. Principal Christie Yarn said, “Andrea doesn’t just get to know her students, she uses that knowledge to tailor her instruction to their individual learning styles and social-emotional needs. This personalized approach fosters a strong sense of belonging and empowers students to thrive.”
Jason Ericson, a physical education teacher at Dogwood Elementary School, was commended for his commitment beyond classroom hours through clubs and community events such as the “Young Male Leadership Club,” “Glowwalk,” and “Color Fun Run.” Principal Kate Beckner said, “Through his innovative programs, positive relationship, and deep connection with students, Mr. Ericson not only fosters a love for physical education but also instills values of perseverance, teamwork, and self-confidence.”
Emmeline Mejia teaches multilingual learners at Justice High School while also coaching junior varsity girls soccer. She created partnerships with local clinics so more students could participate in sports by meeting requirements like physicals or insurance. Principal Sean Rolon said about Mejia: “Her natural ability to connect with students from diverse backgrounds and her deep understanding of their unique needs have made her a trusted mentor to many. Her students consistently express how much they appreciate her support, care, and encouragement in helping them succeed.”
Fairfax County Public Schools concluded its statement by thanking all teachers and staff members for exemplifying professionalism, compassion, leadership—and especially for tailoring support so every student can thrive.
